On one of my frequent browses of Celtic related news items on NewsNow (which we are on, big dogs admit it) I noticed this bizarre article about how some fans want Gamboa in for Lustig on Thursday.
Are people forgetting that Lustig, for once in Europe, played well last week ?
Do these people even remember Gamboa’s horror showing against Bayern, which was probably worse than any performance Lustig’s put in at European level.
I’m aware that Gamboa’s at that patronising ‘cult hero’ status with a lot of fans just now, and the longer he’s not playing, there’s more revisionism about how vital he really is for us.
Lustig, while being deservedly criticised this season for his lacklustre performances, is still the better and balanced option for us on Thursday.
Aleksandr Kokorin is probably going to be far more dangerous on Thursday than he was last week, and I’d rather see the experienced Lustig up against him than the naive Gamboa.
In saying that, I’ve just remembered that despite all that experience, Lustig was torn apart by Barrie ‘£6m man’ McKay on more than one occasion in recent years, so who even knows what is going through Brendan’s mind ahead of selecting that team.
I’m still very confident we’ll go through regardless of who starts at right back.
It’s my LOCK OF THE WEEK.
