Celtic V Salzburg - a throwback

Red Bull is a common sight for ensuring chaos in Glasgow, as half your workplaces in the city will be tanked up on the stuff, causing reckless behaviour and questionable decision making under the influence of a well marketed energy drink.

When Salzburg last visited the city, Ronny Deila’s Celtic side could have trotted out the ‘plied with Red Bull’ excuse after the game because it was a let off that we only lost 3-1.

Four years on, we’ve lost by the same scoreline to the Austrians away from home, whereas we drew 2-2 with them in September 2014 at ‘their bit’ - proof that fitba is indeed ‘a funny old game’!

Salzburg outclassed us that night. Only their lack of conviction in front of goal stopped it being a hammering. Of course, we had already qualified and would go onto face Inter Milan in the knockout stages, but it was still a reminder that we weren’t the once formidable side in Europe we had built ourselves up to be under previous managers.

The good news is, this Celtic side will be buoyant from the last two solid wins in the Europa League, and while Salzburg have clearly improved from the last time they were in Glasgow, so have we, and I doubt we’ll have any fear ahead of the game tomorrow.

They’re going for 6 wins out of 6, and while it’s not as illustrious as 55, we’ll need to be at our best to stop that - which I’m sure we will be.

Build up continues tomorrow ahead of the game which the review on Thursday or Friday.
