THE BIG STORY: Brendan Rodgers has stated that referees are ‘threatening the lives and careers’ of players with their poor decisions, as players are running a risk of injury if bad challenges aren’t clamped down on.

The Celtic boss also revealed that assistant referee Frank Connor apologised to Dedryck Boyata after awarding a penalty against him in Saturday’s Betfred Cup semi-final against Hibs.

Rodgers also expressed ‘sympathy’ for under-pressure Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha and slated Motherwell’s Ryan Bowman after some of his...challenges against Rangers on Sunday. Hopefully the referees in next month’s Celtic-Motherwell trilogy deal with Motherwell’s ‘unique’ style of play.

OTHER NEWS: Celtic yesterday won the ‘FIFA Best’ award for the fans’ display against Hearts at Celtic Park in May...on the same day that the club were fined by UEFA . Talk about irony. Anyway, Celtic chairman Ian Bankier was delighted with the ‘incredible honour’.

Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller will miss next week’s Champions League game at Celtic Park as he has suffered a thigh injury.

ON THIS DAY: In 1999 a ‘controversial’ last minute Morten Wieghorst gave Celtic a last minute 2-1 win over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. Debate after the game revolved around Wieghorst’s header and if it crossed the line or not. Judge for yourself below.
